Verse 18 Live and let die

This is #8&13 in the biblegateway.com list and #17&32 on the google list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Romans 12:1-2
Chapter 12
A Living Sacrifice
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

SIS

Romans 6:13
Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

1 Peter 2:5
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:23
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

Colossians 3:10
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

OPQ

The world can conform us but only Christ can transform us.

HIJ

This is in reaction to the good news you have read so far in this letter. Which concisely is, the gospel is God's power to save us. It is that though, regardless of background we have failed to meet God's standard of law keeping, or sinned. Now Christ who kept it perfectly, was offered on our behalf so that our sinfulness can through His death be exchanged for His righteousness. Which is accepted by faith, and if accepted means you are no longer in condemnation but covered by His grace both now and forever, not that it gives you licence to sin. As you view yourself in this exchange, we should see ourselves dead to sin, alive to God. And through His Spirit live for Him even though the our nature make us do contrary what we want to do. And nothing will or can separate us from His love because he has chosen us, and it is Him who justifies you.
So from all this we shouldn't want to live for the world and how it wants us to think, but God and allow Him to change our views on life. That will be the sacrifice that is made, as we live in constant renewal and transformation of our minds.
Ephesians 5:15-17
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Verse 17 Are you washed in the right thing

This is #12 in the google list and #59 in the biblegateway.com list.

Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

SIS

Mark 16:16
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Acts 22:16
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name. ’

PIC

So is baptism needed for personal salvation. Well this verse follows the question
Acts 2:37
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

And what had they heard, amoungst others, that as a nation or people group they had crucified the Christ. There were no Gentiles present, all were Jews from various countries to practice the Passover. So this baptism request is a response to them.
They had the personal response needed already given to them in verse 21, which mirrors the reply given to the Phillippian jailer in Acts 16.
Acts 2:21
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

We are washed in the blood of Jesus, not just water, as revelation 1.5 says, and is backed up by 5.9 and Romans 3.25.
Revelation 1:5
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

We are saved by the cross alone through faith alone by grace alone. The thief on the cross illustrates that, for he was saved without an opportunity for baptism.

HIJ

But here is the promise that although we have rejected Christ, His Cross brings us near. Though we have blasphemed His name, His name opens the door to salvation. And He offers us rebirth, of life and spirit, even giving us The Holy Spirit.
As a loving response we can be baptised, to say or witness to what He has already done. And Paul puts it beautifully in his letter to the Galatians.
Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Verse 16 A matter of life and death

This is #11 on the google list and #29 in the biblegateway.com and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

SIS

John 3:16
For God So Loved the World
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Galatians 6:8
For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

HIJ

It's a case of do you want what you earn or what's on offer as a gift. The life of sin that you have from birth, accrues its result,
Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.
We may see nothing wrong with it, but if its not right with God, it misses the mark, the very definition of sin, and only gets you death as a result.
But God is there with a gift of forgiveness wrapped in grace presented by Christ and his outstretched nail pierced hands.

Isaiah 53:1
Chapter 53
1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

He has shown you the way to eternal life, and that through His Son. Will you refuse it?

Verse 15 Trust know and live

This is #6&7 on the biblegateway.com list and #28 on the google list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

SIS

1 Chronicles 28:9
David's Charge to Solomon
9 “And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

Proverbs 16:3
Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.

HIJ

So we are to wholly trust, wholly depend and wholly live for God. Now we are so blessed to have a Lord who has done that, He even called it His meat, or food and drink as it were. He even said

John 5:19
The Authority of the Son
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

So we can see from Jesus' life how to trust know and live for God. And thankful that He did it perfectly to we can fully trust Him for our life now, and into eternity.

Verse 14 Say it like you mean it

These are #10 in the google list and is #44 in the biblegateway.com list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Romans 10:9-10
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

SIS

Matthew 10:32
Confessing Christ Before Men
(Luke 12: 8,9)
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

1 Corinthians 12:3
Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

Acts 16:31
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

1 Peter 1:21
who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

HIJ

Now to confess that Jesus is Lord, is not just to say that He is in charge of your life, though He is. There is another aspect to this, in Rome you were living in the midst of a Caesar cult-like enviroment, and in that context to say Jesus is Lord is a dangerous thing. For to say that anyone apart from Caesar was your God, put you in jeopardy.
And that makes the belief in Jesus' resurrection all the more vital, as Paul would point out,

1 Corinthians 15:17
And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

So it is needed for our faith to have value and our salvation to be sure.
It has all been done by Christ, and so salvation is not based on it. Saying that, our faith is to be manifest, not a secret thing, a truth made evident, not a secret kept hidden.

The Passover Lamb 2 (Missed the SIS)

Apologies for the omission, also it would've meant a really long post for me just to add it in.

SIS

Exodus 3:17
and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.”’

Exodus 10:2
and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the Lord.”

Numbers 9:12
They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.

Numbers 33:4
while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had struck down among them. On their gods also the Lord executed judgments.

Psalms 34:20
He keeps all his bones;
not one of them is broken.

Psalms 105:36
He struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the firstfruits of all their strength.

Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.

Hebrews 9:14
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Hebrews 11:28
By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

Revelation 5:6
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Verse 13 Word! What is it good for?

This is #9 on the google list which is also highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible and I've included #33 in the biblegateway.com list which follows it.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

SIS

Romans 15:4
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

2 Peter 1:20-21
knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

1 Timothy 6:11
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

OPQ

Jesus loves me, This I know, For the Bible tells me so.
Anna Bartlett Warner, American Poet

HIJ

In one of Paul's final instructions to Timothy is a reminder that all Scripture is accurate and reliable. And on the road to Emmaus, Jesus used it.

Luke 24:27
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

It is not a collection of writings that men decided to write, it is breathed out by God. Isaiah 55.11 literally implies it is from His mouth, and does what God wants it to.
So what is the result of all of this, just go one verse back, it is able to make you wise for salvation. And that is through faith in Christ Jesus. We see it as a mirror to show us our sinful nature and how we have gone our own way apart from God. But God who wants reconciliation and provided the means through Jesus' cross.
Or to put it another way,
2 Corinthians 5:18-19
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Saturday Prophecy 2 The Passover Lamb

Exodus 12:3-7
Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers 'houses, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.
7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

Exodus 12:11-14
In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
14 “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.

Exodus 12:21-27
Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. 24 You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever. 25 And when you come to the land that the Lord will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service. 26 And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service? ’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses. ’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

John 19:31-36
Jesus 'Side Is Pierced
31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness— his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth— that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”

1 Corinthians 5:7
Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

1 Peter 1:19
but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

HIJ

The Passover is one of the holiest days on the Hebrew calendar. To remember the time the 'Angel of death' passed over the Isrealite houses on which the lamb's blood had been applied on to the doorframes of their houses. Whilst the Eygptians suffered the loss of their firstborn sons, the Israelites were spared because they were literally under the blood.
You can picture the scene as the boy looks at the lamb they as a family looked after up to this day, was killed instead of him. Would check that his father correctly applied its blood to the door so he was protected. Though sad for the animal he knew his life depended on that sacrifice and the application of the blood. He did nothing towards his salvation but just rested in the good of it.
When we see Jesus, we see the 'Lamb of God' who takes away the sins of the world, the one who through His blood allows us to come boldly into God's presence. No wonder we will sing

Revelation 5:9-10
And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

OPQ

The whole Christian faith rests not on emulating Christ, it's not about men and women climbing up to God. It's about God descending to save a rebel race.

Verse 12 Hello Him

This is #5 on the biblegateway.com and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Genesis 1:1
Chapter 1
The Creation of the World
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

SIS

Psalms 89:11
The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
the world and all that is in it, you have founded them.

Psalms 102:25
Of old you laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.

Isaiah 42:5
Thus says God, the Lord,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:

John 1:1-2
Chapter 1
The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

HIJ

God here is the Hebrew uniplural noun 'Elohim'. There is therefore more than one there, and from John 1.1 we know know Jesus (the Word) was there, and every that was there and is here was made by the trinity. It is as simple as that.
The bible does not need to argue there is a God, it presents it as plain fact. Also creation, as Paul writes is evidence enough for it.

Romans 1:19-20
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Verse 11 Our means and method (and price)

This is #8 on the google list and #49 on the biblegateway.com list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

SIS

Luke 24:48
You are witnesses of these things.

John 15:27
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

HIJ

The instruction of being an witness is at the heart of the whole of the book of Acts. Also these are Jesus' last words before His ascension. They give a person, power and pattern to the witness. 'My witnesses' says it is to be of Jesus and not of themselves, as Paul would write,

1 Corinthians 2:2
For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

The power behind this is to be by the Holy Spirit, who

John 16:13-14
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

And also when you consider that our word martyr, comes from the Greek word for witness, martus. With the exception of John, who admittedly survived being boiled in oil, it meant just that for each of them. His strength was needed, as it is in some countries in the world today, and you can read about them on the Voice of the Martyrs website. But for us where the worst we will get is rejection and ridicule, we have no excuse to refuse his instruction and guidance.
The pattern is at home first, the surrounding area and then beyond. There are many ways we can do it. I usually conclude with a verse but I've given them all through this and I think the lyrics of this song are apt, I believe it is by Wayne Watson.

CHORUS
We work the field of souls
Together you and I
Some fields are blooming now
Other fields are dry
We are not the same
But differences aside
We will work the filed of souls
Together you and I

One is off to foreign soil
To work a distant land
Another anchors close to home
To hold a neighbor's hand
Who has served the Father most
And who has labored best
That life devoted to our God
That devotion will be blessed

One shouts the gospel in the streets
For everyone to hear
He's bold to everyone he meets
The Word is loud and clear
Another cries alone and prays
In silence on her knees
Before the throne day after day
Where human eyes don't see

Verse 10 the unbreakable contract

This is #7 on the google list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

1 John 5:12-13
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
That You May Know
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

SIS

John 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 20:31
but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

1 John 3:23
And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

HIJ

God wants us to know assuredly that we are His. Jesus became a man with the express intention of dying for our sins, and so allow us to start afresh with God. When we are forgiven, God assures us that He does not hold our sins against us, and so can enjoy His fellowship. Jesus is what He said He is, and did exactly what He said He did. And so with no small print in the contract, he who has the Son has life, all we have to do is put our trust in Him. The fulfilment of it is all on God's side.

Philippians 1:6
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Verse 9 the other sports verse

This is #4 in the biblegateway.com list and is #54 in the google list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

SIS

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Ephesians 3:16
that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

1 Timothy 1:12
Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners
12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,

PIC

To suggest that, from this verse, we are the ones who can do everything is to read this wrong. Also in no way is it a mantra for sporting success, as a simple reading of the earlier verses would tell you.

Philippians 4:12
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.

Just the verse before tells us what it's about, it's the secret of being able to be content in the circumstances you are in.

1 Timothy 6:6
But godliness with contentment is great gain,

HIJ

Now Paul writes earlier that he has in one sense so much, circumcision, Israelite heritage, legal and moral excellence and great zeal even calling himself faultless. But concludes that all that is loss for the sake of Christ.

Philippians 3:8-11
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

So get the great power of the resurrection is set against the fellowship of Jesus' sufferings.
And that is what we are able to do in His strength, in good times and bad, in bounty and in need.

Verse 8 What amazing grace

This is #6 on the google list and #11 and 28 on the biblegateway.com and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

SIS

John 4:10
Jesus answered her (a Samaritan woman), “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Romans 3:28
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

2 Timothy 1:9
who (God) saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

Titus 3:5
He (God our Saviour) saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

OPQ

It is by grace that one becomes a Christian and it is by grace that one lives the Christian life
Kay Arthur, Founder, Precept Ministries

HIJ

The relationship between faith and works is one that can be easily misunderstood. If it is works, or our salvation is God's reward for the deeds we do, it can't possibly be a gift. Also in Heaven we'd all be comparing notes as to how we got there. But works from verse 10 is the result of the fact we are saved, and what God has placed for us to do in advance.
There is a small but key word, been, our salvation is past history. I will go back to verse 5 to show this,

Ephesians 2:5-6
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

And is all tied up with that word, 'finished', which Jesus uttered on the cross. A declaration that our sins are once and for all paid for, and will be never brought up again. I will conclude with the words of Paul in the letter to the Colossians

Colossians 2:13-15
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Verse 7 Is this just gonna be bad news

This verse is #5 on the google list and #20 on the biblegateway.com list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:10
as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;

Ecclesiastes 7:20
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Psalms 51:3-5
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.

As people, we don't like to admit that there is something wrong deep within our souls. But until we acknowledge our need for help, we won't look for that assistance. Paul takes the first chapters describing how badly people are in need to be rescued from their sins concluding amoungst others that 'there is none is righteous, no, not one'
Our only hope is in Jesus, God's Son, who came to earth to die in our place so that we might have a relationship with the Father.

Romans 3:24-26
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Only when we are honest with ourselves about our sinful state will we be ready to accept Jesus' work on our behalf.

Saturday prophecy 1 Melchizedek

Each Saturday I will take a break from verse and discuss the numerous prophecies of Old Testament prophecies regarding Christ, unless they will come up in the verse lists. So here is first not covered there.

Genesis 14:18-20
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Hebrews 7:1-3
Chapter 7
The Priestly Order of Melchizedek
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. 3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

Hebrews 7:15-22
This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of him,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek.”
18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:
“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever. ’”
22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

SIS

Psalms 110:4
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”

Romans 8:3
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,

Romans 3:20
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Hebrews 10:22-23
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 8:6
But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

Hebrews 12:24
and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

HIJ

So a priest who came centuries before God had given the Law, or set up the sacrificial system or the Levitical or Aaronic priesthood, and he provides an early foreshadowing of Jesus, who has the office of Priest and King. Jesus, like Melchizedek, did not come from the priestly Levitical family line.
Our High Priest and Lord was the ultimate exception and completion of what God had promised all along; an eternal Priest, who would offer the last and best sacrifice to atone for sin, which happened at the cross, and confirmed and accepted by the resurrection.

Verse 6 who is this about?

This is #3 in the biblegateway list and #14 on the google list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

SIS

2 Timothy 1:9
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

Ephesians 1:10-12
as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
11 In him (Christ) we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 3:9-11
and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,

PIC

So who are 'those who love God' and 'those who are called'. It first is for Christians and Christians alone. If you continue, to verse 30, you will read that it's people who God foreknew and predestined so they can be firstborn among brothers, having been justified and glorified. Those who love Him is not a temporary thing, 'as long as you're loving God', but us a state of condition, because that is not the basis of why we are called, justified and glorified, it is based on His love, which the chapter concludes that it is impossible to be separated from, not coming and going as ours is.

HIJ

Here is the great comfort in this verse, as when we see no good in the misery and disaster in this world, that this is not our ultimate reality. The 'good' God is looking for is that which conforms us to the image of His Son. And all things He works to that end. So confident is Paul of this fact that he puts glorified in the past tense. It's as good as done. And so I will leave you with words Paul writes earlier in the chapter,

Romans 8:18
Future Glory
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Verse 5 The Great Comission

This is #4 on the google list and #10 & #22 on the biblegateway list and is also highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible. I will also include the preceding verse which is #19 on the google list and #93 on the biblegateway list.

Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

SIS

Daniel 7:13-14
The Son of Man Is Given Dominion
13 “I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.

Ephesians 1:20-22
that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

Philippians 2:9-10
Therefore God has highly exalted him (Jesus) and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Luke 24:47
and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his (Jesus') name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my(Jesus') witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

John 14:23
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

OPQ

Christ commissioned His disciples . . . throughout the centuries to continue His ministry of seeking and saving the lost.
Bill Bright, Founder, Campus Crusade for Christ International

HIJ

This is the reminder of His purpose, a purpose He has passed on to His followers. That is to 'make disciples'. Not to build impressive buildings, or to lead well-organised and well-funded programs. Not that you can't but He wants His people to help other people to get to know Him, and teach them how to and what it means to follow Him and to encourage them to do so.
Jesus even instructs us how to do it. We are, first, to talk to other people about Him. Next, we should encourage them to learn the things of God and the person of His Son, and build them up in their faith. As they get to know Him they will naturally begin to talk to others about Him and so the cycle continue.
It should also include the encouraging the person to be identified as His and be His witness, a good way of this would be baptism.
He also gives us two promises, one of His power to do it, and that is the only way it will be effectively done. Second, that we will have His presence in this and any service that we do for Him.
I will leave you with words of Lord found in Zechariah,

Zechariah 4:6
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

Verse 4 Does it say what I think it does? Yes and no

This is the #2 verse from the biblegateway list and #29 in the google 200. It is also highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

SIS

Psalms 40:5
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are more than can be told.

Isaiah 40:9-11
The Greatness of God
9 Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Behold your God!”
10 Behold, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.

PIC

OK, does this verse mean that life will go well for us today, are the plans mentioned here for us, here and now. If you look at verses 4-14 you will see that this is a 'letter' from The Lord to His people going into captivity, and they wouldn't see the good of it for 70 years, and that they are not to listen to the prophets saying "peace, peace when there is no peace" like in chapter 8,14 and other places.
Yes God knows the plans He has for us, just as he did for the apostles. Yet, for Paul that meant

Acts 9:16
For I (the Lord) will show him (Paul) how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”

Involving stonings, floggings, imprisonments and shipwrecks not to mention the other things he would recount in 2Corinthians 11.

HIJ

His ultimate plan for us, is that like the Jews will be brought out of exile back to the promised land, so we will be restored to Him and in the words of Paul in his letter to the Colossians.

Colossians 1:11-14
May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Verse 3 not for the pc

This is #3 on the google and #21 on the biblegateway.com list and is highlighted in the 'Hands On' Bible.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

SIS

Ephesians 2:18
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

Hebrews 10:20
by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,

1 John 5:20
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

OPQ

What God's Son has told me, take for true I do; truth Himself speaks truly or there's nothing true.
St Thomas Aquinas, Catholic Theologian

HIJ

Here Jesus is making an exclusive claim which is very un pc today. Not tolerant of well meaning people believing other things, either other faiths, or morals and ethics, or rationality from man's perspective. But if what Jesus is saying is true, it is cruel to allow someone to continue in a belief which is wrong, and not only that but will lead to being lost, and an eternity of spiritual death apart from Jesus. Not that we who do believe are anything as we were lost and dying as they were, because of our sin, which is the results of us choosing our way and doing actions which God abhors, but are people who have found their leading, reality and life and its focus, in Jesus who through His death and that atoning sacrifice allows us to draw near to the Father in forgiveness and acceptance, to the point where you can be adopted as sons, with a place in His family home where we have a room set aside.
I will conclude with the words of Paul

1 Timothy 2:3-6
This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

Verse 2 Prologue part 1

#2 in the google list which includes #68 in the biblegateway.com list, to which I will add #145 from the google list, which is also a highlighted verse in the 'Hands On' Bible which is,

John 1:1-5
Chapter 1
The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

SIS

Genesis 1:1
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Philippians 2:6
who, though he (Christ Jesus) was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

1 John 5:20
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

1 Corinthians 8:6
yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

Colossians 1:16-17
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

John 8:12
I Am the Light of the World
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 11:25
Jesus said to her (Martha), “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

John 3:19
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

John 9:5
As long as I (Jesus) am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

OPQ

Attribute the humble words to the man born of Mary, but the more sublime and sublime and divinely suitable, to the Word who existed in the beginning.
Amphilochius of Iconium, Early Church Father

HIJ

Here Jesus is referred to as the way that God communicates Himself to the world, by coming down in the form of a man dwelling amoung us. The active, powerful Word of God, that caused creation to burst into existence, and gave it order and structure, through which it is held together. Came from eternity, before creation, and leads to eternity in the future, so that is why our eternal life is dependant on Him, for He is source of it. So to quote John's first letter and reinforce the conclusion from yesterday's post.

1 John 5:12
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Verse 1 (No surprise really)

It shouldn't shock you that the no1 in both search lists, as well as being included in the Hands On list is this one but I will allow the passage to continue to include #57 and #128 in the google list #88 on the biblegateway list.

John 3:16-18
For God So Loved the World
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

SIS

Romans 5:8
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:9-10
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
John 12:47
If anyone hears my(Jesus') words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
John 5:24
Truly, truly, I (Jesus) say to you (the Jewish leaders), whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

OPQ

The only permissible way (to know Christ) is to believe.
Soren Kierkegaard, Danish Philosopher

HIJ

It should go without saying, but these are Jesus' words about himself, He is the Son that He is talking about. The one who has come to save the world, which the Father dearly loves, not condemn it.
But there is no fence to sit on here as verse 18 will conclude, you can't be agnostic about it, because you are either not condemned, despite all that The Law will shout at you, because you believe in Jesus, and the sacrifice He made on the cross, which the snake in the desert that Moses lifted up speaks of, or you as He puts simply stand condemned already.
So in the words of John's first letter,

1 John 5:13
That You May Know
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

There is a exercise in the Hands On Bible regarding this verse, try writing out verse 16, putting your name instead of 'the world', 'whoever' and insert it between 'him,' and 'should'. They also encourage you if you are a believer to do that same thing but inserting a friend's name that you are witnessing to and hand it to them.

Verse or verses of the year

We, at church, have been asked to think of a verse for the year. Now, for me, to come up with one, when there are over 300,000 of them. So many of them having such valuable truth, will be too great a challenge.
So what I will do, is try to come up with one a day, post it here each day, or at worst every other day.
My list will be comprised from a mixture of the top 200 verses or passages searched for on google, and the top 100 searched for on biblegateway.com and the 104 memory verses/passages highlighted in a youth/kids bible called 'The Hands On' Bible.
I will write them out from the ESV, followed by a section I will call SIS. SIS is Scripture Interprets Scripture, so is a collection of relating verses from the given verse of the day.
If they are revelant I will include other sections. HIJ, 'Here Is Jesus', OPQ, 'One Person's Quote', and 'PIC', 'Put In Context'.
HIJ, a section to show you where Jesus or Christ is in this verse/passage.
OPQ, if I find a person's quote that is relevant or applicable I will post them here.
PIC, some verses/passages are frequently used to show something that if you were to read the paragraph or chapter it is set in would never back up such a conclusion, I will point that out and show what it means in its context.
